Archive Sleuth

This ‘Archive Sleuth’ blog deals with local history around Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow, and Pocantico Hills, NY, and draws heavily on the archival collections at the Rockefeller Archive Center.

I wrote these articles back in 2011-2012. I’m leaving the articles up, and check in from time to time. Some days the blog still gets 30-40 views. Its nice to know some folks find it interesting.

Hello, I write the “Ask Westchester” column for Westchester Magazine. I’ve been doing research on a question we received this month and I think, based on reading your incredible blog, you might be able to help. Would you e-mail your e-mail address so I can explain further. Thanks.

You stated you are doing Kykuit tours on Sundays. Which tour do you do – as there a multiple tours throughout the day?

Hello. I am a Requa descendant. My 5th great grandfather was Sergeant Daniel Requa, married to Maritie Martling. Do you ever run across any information on Requas? The land he and his brothers (among others) were given after the Revolutionary War as I understand it, is now the Rockefeller property. The Requas had been tenant farmers to the Philipse family and after the Revolutionary War petitioned the state for the confiscated lands of the manor.

I moved to Tarrytown 11 years ago and from the very beginning I was fascinated by its history. It took a global pandemic to finally have the time to do some light research for my own interests. I’m genuinely enjoying your site and appreciate the work you put into it.
